Why should you start conserving water?
About 71 percent of the Earth's surface is water-covered, and the oceans hold about 96.5 percent of all Earth's water. Water also exists in the air as water vapor, in rivers and lakes, glaciers, in the ground as soil moisture and in the living organism and yet we have the problem of water scarcity on our planet. The crucial reason behind this is the lack of use able water or drinking water on the earth and even after knowing this we doesn’t take the effective steps.
Globally, 844 million people lack access to clean water. Without clean, easily accessible water, families and communities are locked in poverty for generations. Children drop out of school and parents struggle to make a living. In fact Women and children are worst affected — children because they are more vulnerable to diseases of dirty water and women and girls because they often bear the burden of carrying water for their families for an estimated 200 million hours each day.
Rapid Industrialization, Growth in human population, dumping waste in water resources, excess use of fertilizers on soil has contributed vastly in water scarcity resulting in the birth of various water-borne diseases. And according to the World Health Organization, waterborne diseases account for an estimated 3.6% of the total DALY (disability- adjusted life year) global burden of disease, and cause about 1.5 million human deaths annually.
Clean water access changes everything; it is a stepping-stone to development. Once people have access to clean water, they are better able to practice good sanitation and hygiene. Children enjoy good health and have a greater chance of attending school. Parents put aside their concerns about water-related diseases, and lack of clean water access. Rather they should feed and diversify the crops and livestock their incomes.
No doubt the whole world is trying to conserve water as much as possible moreover many NGOs and people are becoming more and more aware and taking every precautionary steps to save it, as now they understand that if procrastinate it now their future generation will suffer.
But every individual on this planet can contribute in preserving water for themselves as well as for their future generation by taking these small steps:
- Turn off that tap in time: Generally when we are busy while brushing teeth or scrubbing hands with soap, we let the water gush out from the tap and meanwhile a lot of water is wasted on a daily basis.
- Switch to filling up a bucket instead of taking a shower: As you stand under a shower, a lot of water goes straight down the drain. Instead, fill up a bucket and have accountability of how much water you are using. This way you only use the amount of water you really require.
- Start using the waste water of water purifier wisely: The waste water from a purifier can be used for multiple reasons like washing your car, cleaning floor etc. A detailed explanation of How to use waste water of RO is given here
These are just few of the way of preserving water which can be followed by every home. You can do much about preserving water by contributing in different initiatives of government regarding water preservation.
At last there's enough for everyone need but due to some people greed the rest of society has to suffer and they have to bear the problem of scarcity of resources. Therefore our today's initiative can save ourselves as well as our future generation.
